Checkpoint Charlie, located in Berlin has a historical significance. It used to be the crossing point between East Germany and West Germany during the Cold War. The name was given by the Western Allies.

History: On August 13, 1961, Berlin Wall was built to separate East and West Berlin, more due to some diplomatic reasons. Checkpoint Charlie was a crossing point in the Berlin Wall, located at the juncture of Friedrichstraße with Zimmerstraße and Mauerstraße. This crossing was built as the single crossing point for foreigners as well as the members of the Allied forces, even though the members of the Allied forces were not allowed to use the other crossing point, the Friedrichstraße railway station which was essentially designated for the foreigners.

The main function of the checkpoint Charlie was to register and inform the members of the Western Military Forces before entering into East Berlin. Foreign tourists were also informed but they were not checked in the West Berlin. The German authority in both West and East Berlin was not allowed to check any member of the Allied Military Forces in both Berlin and Germany.

The crossing, Checkpoint Charlie was removed on June 22, 1990. The previous Allied guardhouses are now shifted to the Allied Museum. But a copy of the American guardhouse was erected on the original place in the year of 2000. More over, the East German watch tower at Checkpoint Charlie was pulled down by the Checkpoint Charlie Service Company on December 9, 2000. A 140 meter long section of the Berlin Wall was erected again by the museum in 2004.

In the present point of time, Checkpoint Charlie has turned out to be one of the main tourist attractions in Berlin. This is free site for the visitors. The tourists can enjoy an open-air exhibit on the Gallery walls about the escape attempts, how the checkpoint was built, and its significance as a key point of Cold War. The tourists can take their pictures with actors, dressed up as allied military policemen standing in front of the guard house, for some fees. checkpoint charlie in Berlin

Explore Algarve

Posted by admin as Travel

Looking for the ultimate Sun-Sea-Sand vacation, explore Algarve. Algarve offers some of the most beautiful beaches of Europe as well as the world. In this age, when political insecurity is ruining the travel industry, Algarve is successful to retain its appeal and charm to the world. Another plus point of the place is that, Algarve is accessible from anywhere Europe. Moreover, Portugal itself is a very small country in Europe, so exploring Algarve seems to be easier. But the feature, which stands out excellently for the place is its wonderful, mild climate throughout the year.

Beaches: Algarve is a land of beaches. It has some of the most wonderful beaches in the world, like Praia de Barril, Praia da Armona, Meia Praia, Praia Verde, Praia Ilha de Tavira, Armação de Pera, Praia da Galé, Praia da Falésia, Praia da Falésia, Praia da Bordeira, Praia da Ilha de Faro etc. In all the beaches, the following facilities are given:

Best water quality

Information about the local ecosystem

Adequate sanitary, safety and first-aid facilities

Proper maintenance of any buildings on the beach

Accommodation: Selecting an Algarve accommodation can be a thorny affair, as there are plenty of options ranging from luxury hotels to camps. All types of Algarve accommodation keep a Complaints Register for inspection by the Tourist Authority. The accommodation prices don’t fall under any form of legal control.

A 50% discount on full meals should be available for under-8-children. An extra bed should be given if young children share a room with adults, but this facility is attached with a supplement of 25% or 30% on the room price.

The more we think, the more the options appear. When we start planning for the much awaited vacation, the first thing occurs in our mind is the travel destination. And this is probably the hardest factor to choose, when everyone from the group has something to suggest. It is especially difficult because there are options galore. Someone rightly has said that choosing a travel destination is more like choosing a house. The only difference is that you don’t have to live in your vacation spot for your life.

First of all, you need to sit down with your group and discuss the following points. It is quite obvious that you will not agree on everything, but it is always advisable to go with the majority.

Purpose: Firstly figure out why you are looking for holiday. If this is simply because you want a break from your daily lives, your choice should be different from a family holiday or a holiday for your kids.

Budget: Secondly discuss your budget. If your budget is high enough, you can choose a posh or long holiday but in case of small budget it is always better to choose short getaways, thereby you have to choose a nearby place.

Distance: If you have a kid with you, you can not afford to undertake a long journey. So in that case, you have to select a nearby destination.

Time and duration: Time is a key factor in selecting your travel destination. If you want to vacation in winter, select a beach area while in case of a summer vacation select a mountainous or snowy region.

Again duration of your tour plays a vital role. If you have shortage of time, then you ought to select a nearby place, so that you can return within few days. But if you have 10 days or more leave, then you can easily sail out far away.

Conveyance: Select the mode of conveyance. If you will choose a flight or a train, you can select furthest station while if you choose to drive, you have to choose a nearby location.
