The town of Toledo has a historical significance. Located across the Tagus River, Toledo was the capital of Spain 15th century, when the capital was shifted to Madrid. But Toledo definitely has managed to retain the old grandeur till today.

A trip around the boundary of the city will alone reward its visitors with the views of the ruins of a Roman civilization.

There you can see Alcazar, built in 1085; a building which was built back to Roman times, now bears some of the greatest Roman artifacts. This large building has a stunning museum and a 13th century cathedral. The cathedral in tern houses a series of exquisite stained glass, delicate wooden carvings, stone sculptures and paintings, making it the ultimate destination for art lovers.

Casa y Museo de El Greco is the house of the Greek religious painter El Greco, although it is said that the house was built by Samuel Levi, a friend and adviser to King Peter I of Castile. Don Benigno de Vega-Inclán started the museum in the year of 1910. . Today Casa y Museo de El Greco is the abode of some distinguished art works like ‘Vista y Plano de Toledo / A View and Map of Toledo’ and ‘Portrait of St. Peter’.

Hospital de Tavera was built for Archbishop of Toledo in the year of 1541. Today the building houses some great art collections including Titian’s ‘Portrait of Emperor Carlos’ V, Claudio Coelle’s painting of Princess Clara Eugenia, El Greco’s ‘Baptism of Christ’ and Ribera’s unusual portrait of a bearded woman.

Monasterio de Santo Domingo El Antiguo, an 11th-century convent, now displays religious items and early works by El Greco.
